Search Engine Optimization

Optimized Sites = SEO

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? We will explain this in a simple Rhino way. We will illustrate what Search Engine Optimization is and how it works in our personal point of view.

There are two different kinds of sites:

NON-optimized Sites

Optimized Sites

If you are reading this, your site may not be optimized. So what is exactly is site optimization? It is a technique that helps improve the site performance on searches performed on search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.).

Organic Vs. Paid Results

There are two different search results:

Organic Search result (SEO). These are the searches displayed on the main section of the page of the search engine results. These organic searches account for 80% of the clicks.

Paid Search results (PPC). These searches are displayed on the sides and top of the search results as paid ads or sponsored results.

SEO Spiders?

All of the search engines use a thing called spiders. These spiders crawl the sites to get information about them and return to the nest (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) with information. This information is stored (indexed) so that when someone looks on a search engine, what Google will actually show is the information that has been stored in the index (database).

So how does the search engine choose your site? That is hard to tell because every search engine uses a different formula, and this formula is top-secret. But there are logical techniques that will help you achieve these.

Luck (if someone says different, they’re lying!)

These days, lots of companies offer the so called optimization “SEO” for your site. They promise you will be on the first page of Google in the next three months. But this can’t be true, first of all because no one knows how Google place websites on the searches “Organic Search.” Even if your site is optimized, it is difficult to guarantee a specific keyword at a certain time, whether for organic results or local search results.

There are basic principles to optimize a site. These principles can be found on the Internet and in many books. We always encourage our customers to learn a little more about this subject.

The Six SEO Principles by Rhino

We have chosen six principles that will be explained to you. You have to remember that SEO is not everything you need to position your site. Understand that following these steps won’t guarantee that your site will be listed in the searches and that performing a site optimization is not like following an instruction guide. It takes experience, knowledge and time.

  • Step SEO #1Index your site: You have to index your site to Google and Bing. This means that you will let the search engines know that you have a site. Review whether or not your site is indexed on the search engines.
  • tep SEO #2Site Map: You have to create a site map of your site. This is a document that will help the search engines crawl your site and learn the site’s structure.
  • Step SEO #3Keywords: You have to know your keywords and what your business is about. It is important to use these keywords in the text, titles, links and images. Also use them on your meta tags. Just don’t overuse them—you can be penalized for that.
  • Step SEO #4Site Structure: Your site should have a nice, neat structure. If your site is a mess, your SEO will probably be a mess, too. Keep your site no more than three levels deep, and use links to different pages of your site, giving different importance to each page, and make the navigation easy.
  • Step SEO #5Site Coding: The code of your site is really important, as this can affect your Search Engine Optimization performance. If you don’t understand your site code, the relationship between the pages, if you use flash and java and you are not using CSS documents, we suggest that you redo your site. It will take you more time to correct these issues than simply to build a brand new site.
  • Step SEO #6Site Content: Use rich text, pictures, videos, and all kind of information that you think your clientele will need. Don’t use only pictures; text is a must if you want to optimize your site. As we already discussed in step #3, don’t forget your keywords.
